I wouldn’t want it any other way
The bad comes with the good.
My regular season was a good regular season. My postseason was not. The thing to remember is that if you put your heart into it, if you care, if it means something to you, it’s going to hurt. I don’t think I would want it any other way. If I was sitting here and didn’t feel anything right now, then I need to do something else. That’s a waste of my life of putting it all on the line. That’s kind of what the role is all about. It’s feast or famine.
It’s also important for other people to understand that if you go out there and get a loss, blow a save, it’s not so much that you hurt for yourself. Feeling sorry for yourself, I’ve always said is a waste of energy. You can’t do anything to change it. But the energy and the time and the love that you put in for your teammates, that’s what makes it hurt. That makes worth it, too.
On the flip side, the other team, whoever that is, unless you win your last game, the other team is celebrating. That’s why we play. We show up at the beginning of the season to win the World Series.
At first you feel numb to it, because it’s a shock. That’s what me sitting on the bench was at first. But after I came out of the game, we still had three outs to play. So you’re still trying to figure out a way to help your team win. I was on the top step, cheering our guys on. It’s not over until it’s over, obviously. You’ve seen that a lot in this postseason. Weakness is quitting at that point. Weakness is feeling sorry for yourself.
Weakness is expecting people to pat you on the back. You appreciated it. Does it help? Not really? Does it hurt? No. Then do you appreciate it? Absolutely.
When it’s over, some people sit in the dugout, dwell on it. To me, I don’t sit out there for too long. It’s over. My team is in the clubhouse, so that’s where I go.
Those next five minutes are probably the worst, worse even than Ryan Howard’s game-tying double or Werth’s ball falling in for the go-ahead run. Those are the worst moments, just because there is nothing left that you can do.
But you go into the offseason, you learn from it. For me, I realize how special a year it was for this group of people.
And 2010, that’s all that’s left to put your energy toward.

Thank you thank you. I’m stuck in England, and watching the game end last night at 3am was pretty heartbreaking, but you, once again, know how to put it in perspective. Thanks for blogging, for letting us in. Sure makes me feel a lot less lonely. You are pretty “top drawer,” and I can’t wait to see what you and the rest of the team will do next year.

I was saddened to hear you booed last night. You are one of the main reasons the Rockies were in the play-offs to begin with – from a team, that at the beginning of the season, looked like they’d finish last in the NL West! I, like all the other fans was disappointed and deflated – not at you personally, but at the outcome. I think the fans at Coors field were just expressing that emotion too.
You are a great pitcher who is a major role model to my 17 year old son (HS varsity LHP). You had an amazing season and my entire family looks forward to seeing you in Spring Training. Keep up the good work and have a great off-season!

Thanks for the great season! It was an exciting summer of baseball. I don’t feel bad today because the team accomplished so much and have so much to look forward to next year. The playoff games weren’t blow outs, but well played and fought. But, you made it even more fun to watch as you would come to the mound and the excitement was ratcheted up. I admire your proper perspective. It says a lot about you.

You are a Colorado Rockie; Rockies fight adversity even in the face of defeat. They never stopped fighting in 2007 when the odds were stacked against them. They never stopped fighting in the World Series despite constant attacks from a suburb opponent. YOU never stopped fighting this year, when you arrived here as part of Holliday’s somewhat controversial trade, when you lost your closers job because of early struggles, when the Dodgers took a 15.5 game lead, when your manager was replaced, when critics thought an 11 game winning streak was just a fluke, when you had to scratch for each game in the standings, when the time came to hold off the Giants and their magnificant pitching, when the time came to ignore Atlanta’s easier schedule in September, when the time came to take down the reigning world champions. A vast majority of the time, you fought and you won. Your victories helped to produce arguably the finest Rockies team to ever take the field. I’m confident that you’ll learn from your defeats and bring your undying ambition and (most importantly) the world-class character you’ve always had to Coors Field next year. This year, however, I, along will all other true Rockies fans, thank you for everything.
we wouldn’t want it any other way either. sure, this isn’t the ending anyone would have drawn out, but still, this is the kind of season baseball fans dream about. watching you all play this season brought me so much joy, not to mention lifelong memories. and the best part is, in just a few short months, it starts all over again and the same nucleus of guys will be there. i’m just as proud of this team’s character and heart as their play. so keep your head up, huston! don’t get too down on yourself because of a few rough performances. the outstanding way you pitched for us during the year more than makes up for that. i love what you’ve brought to the team and hope to see you in purple pinstripes for many years to come. you are truly a class act and you wouldn’t believe how proud i am to call myself a rockies fan. this ending doesn’t make us love you or the rest of the team any less.

Hey! Not Sure if the MLB players actually read the comments but I just wanted to say Im a Phillies fan and I came onto the blog to see what you had to say about the past series. I recently had failed a couple of tests and I was all but ready to throw the towel in for the rest of my semester ( and quite possibly my dream ) but your words changed my attitude. Huston, like your blog title says, “I wouldn’t want it any other way.” Every time I’ve commented, I’ve told you what an honor it’s been to have you play for this team. The result of the postseason doesn’t change this. You’re an inspiration both on and off the field. Our team has suffered some blows this season; starting off with a losing record, a fired manager, and it looked like we couldn’t ever catch up to the Dodgers, you were there every step of the way. The unfortunate part about being a Rockie fan is that Denver will always be a football nation, you get a lot of bandwagoners at the end. People who don’t understand how hard you work everyday when you go out and pitch. No player should EVER be booed, that gives real fans a bad name. You will continue to be one of my favorite pitchers, regardless of where you go. Thank you for the amazing season you gave us.

I am a long time Phillies fan who does alot of work with your fathers company. I have followed your career this year because you can’t meet James Street without hearing about you. The Rockies are very lucky to have a pitcher of your caliber. There is no question that there playoff appearance was due in large part to you tremendous year. This was a great baseball series and you have a great deal to be proud of. Don’t let this get you down.

You are truely a class act and because of players like you it make me proud to be a Rockies fan. You were the best closer in the National League all season and nothing can take that away. You were instrumental in getting the Rockies to the playoffs. All the real Rockies fans understand how difficult it is to come into that situation, especially against the middle of that Phillies order. I feel for you, and i have been in the exact same situation (on a smaller scale) and i know the feeling. For 3 years we have watched each and every Rockies game on FSN and cheered you on, even if it means staying up past midnight! I feel like I actually know each one of you, and I think I can imagine in a small way how much that final loss hurt – I shed a few tears along with you. You all had your ups and downs this season, which is the way life goes, and you all handled both with class. I was there. On my feet the entire time, cheering for you from the time you came onto the field through the time you walked off. I didn’t boo you (though I may have briefly booed, ahem, a couple of bad calls), and I’m joined by many, many fans in that. The conversations amongst fans in which I’ve been involved are positive, and we hope you stick around for a good while!
You make a very good point with your reaction to the support you are receiving, but know that we genuinely support you and want you to know that. Your perspective is wise beyond your years, and your maturity as a player will surely follow your maturity as a person very quickly. Looking forward to the future!

Huston, from an execution standpoint it looked to me as if poor location got you beat. For example, on Ryan Howard’s double the sinker was rather flat and down and in, right in his sweet zone. Jason Werth took a slider with not much bite to rightcenter for the winner. The pitch seemed a bit up (though not as up and fat as the hanger he hit over the fence off of Jimenez).
Having to throw those two pitches again, where would they go? How did the cold affect your grip and location?
Nice season…tough ending for you. Obviously, you have the mental make-up to learn and come back better.

I grew up a fan of the Twins, and when I was small, I caught a Rod Carew foul ball, which also became signed by Tony Oliva, Lyman Bostock, and of course, Harmon Killebrew.
When the Denver Bears ceded to the Colorado Rockies, I wasn’t really into it. I did take my kids to some games here and there…
Later, it became clear that Selig was mafioso in trying to get rid of the Twins from my youth. I truly learned to disregard baseball.
However, by chance, (or against my will) my youngest daughter and I followed almost every Rockies game this summer, and so …you should accept our thanks, please. We know what you did for the Rockies. We also know what you did for the A’s, and I (but perhaps not my daughter) know what you are doing when you “accept responsibility.”
Thanks for your blog, and for your patience this coming winter with the folks who used you and then later tried/will try to slap you around….I, and I am sure many more, recognize the sad irony in your being booed last night.

I want to thank you for keeping the Rockies alive this season. I am an 18 year old girl and I have been watching the Rocks since before I could walk. The Rocks have always been my team, and all these years we have never had a closer as good as you. My family was pretty good friends with Jerry Dipoto and he was awesome, but not even close to being as good as you. I watched Jose Jimenez throw away game after game after game, even if we were up by 5 points. In those couple of years I don’t think I could have screamed more at my TV. And this year when it?s the 9th inning and Huston is coming in, it?s a relief. I can finally breathe when we are up by 1 point in the 9th. Thank you for being such a great closer. You really kept Colorado in it this year. When I was at the last post season game, I was sitting above the manual scoreboard. When you came in I screamed my head off. I thought there was no possibility we could loose. After that first hit some one behind me said ‘why did they put Street in?’ Let?s put it this way, I gave them a piece of my mind. You have given us nothing but good things this season. You messed up 2 times. Who knows it could have been the cold or the Phils are really good hitters. I don?t care, because either way you got us to the post season. All my friends were so disappointed when we didn’t take the west. I was just happy that I got to watch a couple more games of baseball.

Dear Huston, Thank your for sharing your thoughts and feelings about the last few pitches and the last game. I love baseball and the Rockies and am saddened that you guys didn’t make it through the last game. I can’t imagine the pressure that all of you on the team go through with the games being nationally televised and your every move being scrutinized to the every last twitch of the nose. I went to work on Tuesday with such a feeling of loss, like something was missing that day. It was just OVER. I can’t imagine what it feels like to you guys when you have to clean out your lockers and say good-bye for the last time. I hope that you understand that all the Rockies fans were disappointed and that when people are saddened they do things that aren’t always appropriate. I hope on opening day of 2010 all the Rockies fans come to their senses and realize how great you guys were in 2009 and cheer their hearts out again for you and all they guys that put their hearts and souls into the game. I was in Houston the night you came up and lost the lead and we went on to lose that game. Before the game I had asked you if we were going to win and you said “we’re gonna try.” I lamented in later blogs how upset I was driving to my friends house that night and watching the spirit of the team so down. I wrote there is no try, do or do not. I watched as you guys went out and took the last of that series and went on to St Louis. I talked with you in Milwaukee and I have one of the best pictures of you warming up in the bullpen. You weren’t going to try, you were going to do. The swagger was back. I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for not trying, but doing your best the rest of the season. I gave up everything to travel behind the team for almost half a season. Spent every cent I had and became homeless because I knew there was something special. You were an integral part of that. People would ask me in various cities who I liked the most on the team. I often brought your name up as probably one of the nicest and classiest players we had. Not only in my dealings with you, but every other fan too in all the ballparks I went along with you in. I watched so many guys on the team and how they carried themselves in those cities. Your parents would be proud to know the son they raised. Proud not just for the athlete, but also for the human being. Thanks for being a Rockies player. Thanks for being a classy guy and thanks for helping my dream to have so many highlights along the way. There are fans just like myself who love the game and appreciate a “gamer” when we see it. I’ll be sure to say hey in spring training and maybe I can thank you in person. You did great.

This was a great season. Also a great playoff series, which just ended sooner than all of us wanted.
A memory for a lifetime was watching you pitch the 9th with 2 balls, 2 strikes and 2 outs on the board. The entire stadium held it’s breath as the next 2 pitches were thrown…….. A moment in time, makes a memory for life. Although the result wasn’t in our favor, it was that moment, that collective hope surging through the stands, that made it an amazing moment!
It was a game I was excited to have seen with my wife and little boy!

I know you are a faithful guy and that you know things happen for a reason. Which makes me confident that this outcome will only make this clubhouse even more hungry for next season. I hope you have an amazing off season and look forward to next season. It would be a privelage for Colorado to continue to get to know you and continue to see #16 in purple pin stripes.

Once again, you made baseball exciting. I would like to congratulate you on a wonderful season with the Rockies. Your pitching shined on just as you did in college and for Team USA. More importantly I would like to thank you for spreading the word of Christ and sharing your positive way of thinking. We met you when you attended the University of Texas. My son, Dalton, mailed letters to you, as you were his favorite player. (That’s a difficult thing as a Nebraskan to support Texas baseball!) You were so kind to him and sent him a letter back. This just proved to us what we already knew. That you were a kind and compassionate person, as well as a soldier of Christ. At the 2003 CWS we picked up a copy of Victory magazine. You were on the cover. You shared your positive thinking and love of Christ with thousands of people that day. You had an impact on this family, and especially my son, forever. You have been an outstanding role model for my son. He still loves you and follows your every move. He also knows what you believe and admires that you are not afraid to let it be known. When we returned to the series in 2004, you saw him by the dugout with a shirt on that had a picture of you and him together. You came right over and said hello and signed his shirt. You acted as if you knew who he was, and perhaps you did. That will stay with him forever. Although my son loves baseball, at 13 he had a set back this year when he had a partial tear in his rotator cuff. When life seemed to be falling apart for him, he turned to Christ to help him through. I refered to you when he needed strength. We still don’t know if he will be released to play next year, but we do know that Christ will help him through it.
We were able to make the 3 1/2 hour trip to Coors field twice this year. Both times you came in to pitch. Although the people around us thought we were crazy you had 4 Huskers in the top of the stadium bursting at the seams. We yelled, hooped and hollered for you Huston. We were so proud of you, but not nearly as proud as we were when we saw you in the video sharing the impact Christ has had in your life. Continue to spread your positive thinking, your love of Christ and continue to inspire today’s youth.

I think you are a great pitcher. I am so glad you came to the Rockies this year. Thanks for always coming in and closing out the game for us. Because of you we won a lot of games. I loved watching you pitch and i am one of your biggest fans. I hope to see for years to come.
